'Royals' was the debut single by New Zealand born Lorde (born Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor) released on 'The Love Club EP' in 2012. Co-written with her producer, Joel Little, 'Royals' was later released on Lorde's debut album 'Pure Heroine' in 2013.
'Royals' was said to have be written within the art pop/electro pop genres, with Lorde stating that it was written to express disapproval at the extravagant lifestyles of contemporary artists that didn't reflect her or her peers reality.
Having reached number one in the UK Singles Chart, Irish Recorded Music Association (IRMA) Chart, Billboard Hot 100 (USA), Canadian Hot 100, and New Zealand Top 40 Chart, 'Royals' won 'Song of the Year' and 'Best Pop Solo Performance' at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards in 2014. The song also reached top forty positions in South Korea and Japan, and top ten positions in Germany, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Portugal, Australia and more countries.
